PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A zebra born Jan. 19 can now be seen at the Phoenix Zoo.
The male foal is the 19th zebra born since 1987 at the zoo and helps bolster the sparse population of Grevy's zebras, an endangered species, said Linda Hardwick with the zoo.
The foal weighed 100 pounds at birth and is now exploring his exhibit along the Africa Trail at the zoo with his parents, Masika and Punda, and another foal, Utambo, which was born in November. Both foals share the same father, Hardwick said.
The newest foal was named Bakari on Wednesday when Masika chose from three names.
The foal's mother choose from three bags of treats that were each labeled with a name selected by the Zoo's hoofstock team. The names were:
Pembe, Swahili for horn (Though hornless, the Grevy's zebra's historical range encompasses the majority of the Horn of Africa, Hardwick said.)
Bakari, Swahili for one who will succeed
Akili, Swahili for cleverness
There are fewer than 2,500 Grevy's zebras in the wild because of loss of habitat, competition with livestock and poaching, Hardwick said.
Grevy's are the largest zebra species and are distinguished from other zebras by their longer legs, more narrow stripes, white, stripeless underbelly and large rounded ears. They are found in northern Kenya and southeastern Ethiopia, Hardwick said.
