PHOENIX (CBS5) -
We will probably never know what motivated the Baseline Killer to commit the heinous acts that brought fear to Valley for an entire year. That's according to a forensic psychiatrist with knowledge of the case.
"That requires you to have an active, willing participant who is willing to acknowledge the wrongfulness of their actions. That's not going to happen," said Dr. Steven Pitt.
Pitt worked on several high-profile cases, including the JonBenet Ramsey investigation, the Columbine High School shooting and the Baseline Killer task force. He told CBS 5 Investigates that Mark Goudeau will likely never admit he did it.
"He's pretty invested in the 'I'm a victim of this' story. 'I'm a victim and they got the wrong guy.' And he's good," said Pitt.
Mark Goudeau was convicted of all nine murders in the Baseline case, but during a three-hour interview with a British documentary company, Goudeau insists he was framed by police.
"He's a sociopath. He's a good sociopath. I mean, if I were nominating people, he'd get best actor in a true crime story right now," said Pitt.
Pitt said he believes Goudeau has street smarts and that allowed him to be a successful serial killer. And Goudeau's social skills gave him access to his victims.
"The public has this perception that people who go around like this and do devilish things walk around with a sign on them that says, 'I'm the devil,' and they have horns sticking out of their heads. Nothing could be further from the truth," said Pitt.
