Many taxpayers have already seen federal refunds post to their checking accounts. The federal government began issuing direct-deposit refunds late last week.
You could find a longer wait, however, if you are due to receive a state income tax refund in Louisiana.
The State of Louisiana has implemented a new identity verification system which has caused a delay in processing. Tax fraud cases in Louisiana directly discovered as a result of current theft protection measures rose to almost 23,000 cases in 2012, according to the Louisiana Department of Revenue.
The state will begin issuing its first batch of refunds on February 26. The State of Louisiana says information on electronic returns should be available within 10 days of a return being transmitted. Information on paper returns could take 12-16 weeks to process.
If a Louisiana state return is identified as questionable in the review process, the taxpayer will then be directed to a customized online data test or a telephone survey that will serve as a secure method to verify the identity and final certification of the return, the state says.
