Suspect caught in chase on SR 85 in West Valley speaks from jail - WSFA.com: News Weather and Sports for Montgomery, AL.

The Department of Public Safety has caught a man after a chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph on State Route 85 in the West Valley on Friday.

DPS said the suspect, identified as Joshua Marcus Bloom, 35, was driving recklessly. When they tried to stop him, he took off. The passenger-side mirror struck one of the DPS officers in the wrist as Bloom drove away.

"We got several calls that this person was driving erratically, aggressively, tailgating, waving his arms around," said Officer Carrick Cook with the Department of Public Safety.

In a jailhouse interview Monday with CBS 5, Bloom says he sped away from police since he knew his license was suspended, and he was concerned police would impound his car and leave him stranded.

"Yes, I did know that I was driving without a driver's license," said Bloom.

Authorities said DPS dispatchers had been receiving reports of a man making gestures with his hands, using it as if it were a gun and pointing it at the other vehicle.

"He went northbound on State Route 85 reaching speeds of 100 miles an hour and during that pursuit, we were able to successfully spike him," Cook said.

However, Bloom claims he never reached speeds that high, though he did apologize to the drivers and police that may have been concerned about their safety during the pursuit.

"I want to honestly apologize and (putting anyone in danger) wasn't my intention," said Bloom. I did think of the other people. I wasn't driving erratically or anything like that. I do honestly apologize and to the officers too, because I know they're only doing their job," he continued.

Driving on rims, DPS said Bloom got on the Interstate 10 East and DPS called in the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to help. MCSO followed Bloom and then they hit Bloom's Toyota, stopping him. Bloom came out of the car with his hands up and got on the ground.

"This is not our first encounter with that vehicle or this person," Cook said.

DPS said Bloom was arrested back in December during their DUI task force, after he led police on another chase. DPS said this time they didn't find any weapons or drugs on Bloom - so why did he run again?

"He made statements that he didn't want to be left out in the desert," Cook said. "Take it for what it is, his driver's license, from what I understand, is suspended and revoked."

Cook said they would never leave someone high and dry, and while he said Bloom's own actions didn't hurt anyone today, they did leave him stranded in jail.

"In the years I've been doing this, and it's not a ton, but it's enough, nothing surprises me anymore," Cook said.

DPS tells us Bloom will be facing charges for flight, driving on a suspended license, and possibly endangerment.
