A 27-year-old Valley native, Tyrice Thompson, was laid to rest Sunday after being attacked and killed at a Scottsdale bar.
At the same church where he grew up, the family and friends of Thompson said their last goodbyes Sunday at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Phoenix.
"I just remember a lot of times in the kitchen he loved to cook, and when I would make sweet potato pies, he would sit around and wait for the bowl so he could lick the bowl. Just the little things like that I'm going to miss. His character, everything, just everything. He was such a joy," said Thompson's mother, Nancy Taylor.
Police said the 27-year-old bouncer was stabbed by a customer Jan. 27 at Martini Ranch. He had only been on the job a few weeks and was the proud father of a 4-year-old little boy.
Inside the church the number 81 was set up in a bouquet of roses, the former ASU tight end's number, and a picture of him with wings was displayed for everyone to see.
Taylor explained her last memory with her son.
"He actually dropped me off at the airport. I left for Oklahoma to bury my step-mom and he took me to the airport and two days after that, that's when I got the phone call."
His mom wore a ring to the funeral that Thompson gave her and she said she would never take it off.
"Just love your kids because you just never know," said Taylor.
The family tells CBS 5 News the man arrested for Thompson's death was given a lesser bond because he is in the military. They said they just want to see justice served.
