Two new trustees for Auburn University have been confirmed by the Alabama Senate. The Senate voted Thursday to approve Wayne Smith and Michael DeMaioribus for the Auburn board.
The two were recommended by the Auburn trustee selection committee headed by the governor.
Smith is chairman, president and CEO of Community Health Systems in Franklin, Tenn., which operates 135 hospitals.
DeMaioribus is senior vice president of the space and aviation contractor Dynetics in Huntsville.
The appointments of Smith and DeMaioribus, who are white, were criticized by members of the black caucus who said only one of the current 15 members of the board is black.
The Senate also voted Thursday to approve the governor's reappointment of Alabama lead singer Randy Owen to the Jacksonville State University board of trustees.
