Jameel Grace made 4 of 5 3-pointers and finished with 24 points as Southern University pulled away to beat Alabama State 58-49 Saturday.
Malcolm Miller added 13 points and seven assists to help Southern (18-8, 12-2) stay undefeated at home.
Ahead 39-38 with 10:54 left to play, Southern scored seven unanswered points, capped by Grace's three-point play to make it 46-38 with 6:43 remaining.
Denzell McDaniel's 3-pointer cut Alabama State's deficit to 53-49 with 3:13 to play, but that was the closest the Hornets would get as they went scoreless the rest of the way.
The Jaguars shot 47.4 percent (9 of 19), while holding the Hornets to 29.4 percent (10 of 34), in the second half.
Southern made 14 free throws, compared to just three for Alabama State.
Phillip Crawford led Alabama State (8-18, 6-7) with a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
