SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
A Springfield Falcons player was rushed to the hospital on Sunday afternoon after suffering a violent hit from the opposition.
With just under four minutes to go in the second period, Wade MacLeod was hit very hard into the boards, with his head violently hitting the glass.
He could not make it all the way back to the bench and suffered a seizure on the ice.
Paramedics rushed onto the ice within seconds.
The Falcons said in a statement that MacLeod was stabilized and alert while being loaded in an ambulance taken to Baystate Medical Center.
The 26-year-old Northeastern University graduate joined the Falcons in 2011. He showed movement in his left arm while being taken off the ice.
Following that play, both teams went to the dressing room for an intermission.
From there, it was a unanimous decision to suspend the remainder of the game.
"The players held a meeting, both our players and Adirondack players were both visibly shaken, and everybody had agreed unanimously that it was in the best interest not to play the third period," said Bruce Landon, Springfield Falcons General Manager and President. "Players hearts, heads, and minds would not have been in it. For the sake of putting the players at risk for anything else because their heads were not in the game, it was unanimous to just postpone the remainder of the game."
MacLeod's family released a statement late Sunday evening.
They said he is alert, in good condition, positive spirits and resting comfortably.
MacLeod will remain an Baystate to undergo tests.
The Falcons say they will announce a make-up date for the postponed game.
