EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -
A strong storm system will move across the Great Plains today bringing a cold front through East Texas. This front will move through the area later this afternoon producing a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. Winds out ahead of this front will turn to the southwest around 20 to 30 miles per hour and because of this lake wind advisories are in effect today for much of the area.
As temperatures begin to rise later this morning into the early afternoon, the cold front will be making its way through the I-35 corridor to our west. Shortly after the noon hour a few scattered showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop to our west. These storms will move into our western counties around 2 p.m., making their way through the I-20 corridor between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and then Deep East Texas between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
As these storms move through, a few could produce very strong winds over 60 mph and hail up to the size of nickels. The greatest threat for severe weather appears to be across our Eastern counties mainly from Longview to Nacogdoches and points east. The tornado threat looks to remain fairly low as surface winds will remain out of the southwest ahead of the storms. This will limit the amount of twisting available for low level storm rotation. If any storm can remain isolated there is a very small chance a brief weak tornado could occur but again, this does not look like a primary threat.
Once the storms move through drier and cooler air will move in. Temperatures tonight will drop into the upper 30s and lower 40s by the morning hours on Tuesday. Then our attention turns to a much stronger system slated to move through East Texas Thursday morning. This system will need to be watched closely. If the forward speed of this storm system slows down and is able to move through East Texas during the afternoon hours Thursday, a wide spread severe weather event including tornadoes would occur.
