KAWAIHAE, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A statewide high wind advisory hit Hawaii Island hard Monday afternoon, creating at least one large dust devil and blowing shingles off the roofs of several homes.
Shortly after the National Weather Service recorded gusts of 55 miles per hour in Kawaihae and 56 miles per hour in Waikoloa, viewers began sharing video of the severe weather with Hawaii News Now.
In one clip recorded in Kawaihae, a large dust devil appears on the Big Island's northwest side, ripping up what appear to be pieces of roofing and spinning them high into the air.
In another video, strong gusts are heard and a street light is seen swaying in the wind just as shingles begin to rip off the roof of a home.
Monday's whirlwind took place in the same area where a similar severe weather event occurred last month. On Jan. 5, comparable gusts of about 55 miles per hour were reported in the Kawaihae area. On that day, a large dust devil ripped the roof off a house that was under renovation, tossing corrugated metal into an electrical transformer, which exploded.
The current high wind advisory has been extended through Tuesday evening and includes all islands.
