Deputy fired following police bar brawl

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A deputy has been fired in connection to a bar brawl in Prescott in December 2012.

Yavapai County Sheriff Scott Mascher said the Personnel Review Board met on May 7 to review the administrative investigation surrounding the actions of Deputy Mark Boan on Dec. 22, 2012 at the Moctezuma's Bar in Prescott.

YCSO said the final report was completed this week and submitted to Mascher with the recommendation to fire Boan and he was fired on Friday.

In March, the court ordered the release of an unredacted report by the Prescott Police Department on a bar brawl involving Prescott Valley officers, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

Mascher said the investigation of a motorcycle club began when a Glendale man claimed he was assaulted by club members in Prescott on Dec. 22, 2012. Investigators later learned the members of the club were off-duty law enforcement officers.

Earlier this week, Prescott Valley Police Chief Bill Fessler said he was at the center of a conversation that prompted a biker brawl but denies throwing any punches.

Fessler told authorities that someone else got a hold of Justin Stafford at the bar, leaving him with a bloodied and bruised nose.

Following an initial investigation by Prescott police officers, the case was turned over to the Department of Public Safety by then Prescott Police Chief Mike Kabbel.

DPS said it's wrapping up its investigation of the fight. Mascher said once he gets the final report from DPS, he'll determine what administrative action will be necessary.

Both Fessler and Yavapai County sheriff's employee Bill Suttle say a fellow officer hit Stafford, but they didn't know his name.

Suttle says he broke up the fight and immediately sent the law enforcement officer to the hotel where they were staying.
