MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
0House Republicans tout the bill as a way to make abortion clinics abide by similar standards as hospitals across Alabama.
"I am not supportive of abortions but I am very supportive of women and wanting to keep them safe," said Representatives Terri Collins (R-Morgan).
If it becomes law, then the fewer than 10 abortion clinics around the state would be classified as "ambulatory health centers" similar to walk-in doctors offices. And all procedures would have to follow professional standards of care, like those required in hospitals.
One of the biggest concerns among Democrats is that the requirements in the bill are so strict that it could cause all of the state's abortion clinics to close.
"You know you speak about a woman's right to choose. At the end of the day we need to still make sure we're not imposing some type of regulation or restriction on abortion that will put a woman, because of her right to choose, in jeopardy," said Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Jefferson)
The bill passed the House with bipartisan support. It now goes to the Alabama Senate for debate.
