ESSEXVILLE, MI (WNEM) -
A 19-year-old man is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of arson and breaking and entering local churches.
Police say the Bay City man was under the influence of drugs when he damaged two churches.
Police received an anonymous tip that informed them that two area churches were burglarized and lit on fire. Police officials arrived at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Hampton Township to talk with the pastor.
After entering the church, officials smelled something burning that they thought may have been a candle. It turned out that the burning smell was actually a communion rail that had been set on fire.
The suspect also dumped bottles of wine on the carpet and emptied containers of candle oil and rubbing alcohol onto the floor and then lit it on fire.
The teen confessed to vandalizing and setting the church in Hampton Township and First Baptist Church in Essexville on fire.
He is currently being held in the Bay County jail.
