FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Hundreds of thousands of civilian defense workers were put on notice Wednesday. The Defense Secretary said he may have to furlough 800,000 workers if automatic spending cuts take effect.

The nation faces a March 1st deadline to avoid automatic spending cuts. The impending cuts are looming while congress is in recess.

They're not in Washington to work on a way to stop these cuts from happening.

Senator Jeff Sessions talked about these cuts while he was in North Alabama Wednesday.

He said half of all cuts fall on the defense department. He said that is unfair, considering defense only makes up one-sixth of the federal government as a whole.

The senator addressed several groups throughout the Shoals Wednesday and spent the lunch hour addressing the key issues in Washington at the Shoals Chamber of Commerce.

Sessions said the Department of Defense has a long term plan  and  has already taken significant cuts. He said the sequestration would double what they have already planned for, even adding additional cuts.

"The President and Congress are going to have to get together, develop a plan that works. Other departments, half of the government, received no cuts at all," said Sessions. "So if they would just take small reductions in their funding and growth trends - not cuts, reductions - then that would relieve the unfair burden on the defense department and the good civilian personnel that work for the defense department."

Sessions said he believes lawmakers will eventually come to an agreement, but he does not think it will happen before the March 1 deadline.
