MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

U.S. Representative Martha Roby will visit and tour Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery Thursday, just eight days before military cuts known as the sequester are set to go into effect.

Rep. Roby will meet with Maxwell's 42nd Air Base Wing Commander Col. Trent Edwards and tour parts of the base, including the aging air traffic control tower.

Col. Edwards and Rep. Roby are scheduled to speak with the media after the tour.

The Department of Defense announced Wednesday that sequester cuts could result in as many as 800,000 civilian employees being furloughed, a harsh blow to installations like Maxwell Air Force Base that rely on a strong civilian workforce.

Rep. Roby voted against the August 2011 Budget Control Act that threatened the sequester military cuts and has repeatedly spoken out about the potential harm the cuts pose to military readiness and national security.
