SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
Saginaw County and the city of Saginaw will receive nearly $2 million to help fight blight in the two communities.
The grant was announced by the Michigan Department of Human Services on Wednesday.
The grant is part of the Blight Elimination Grant, established by the state to help fund clean up efforts throughout Michigan. The grant is part of $15 million in funding for the project.
The two communities hoped to get up to $4 million in grants but will receive $1.8 million instead.
The original plan for the money would have been to improve a block of vacant building in downtown Saginaw. The funding also would have helped improve over 250 homes on the city's southeast side. Another project would have helped demolish four buildings at the intersection of Genesee and Washington Avenues on Saginaw's east side.
After receiving half of the amount originally applied for, officials will now decide as to what projects will be funded.
