TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

Before it could be completed, federal officials in the U.S. and Mexico shut down a cross-border smuggling tunnel during a border sweep in Nogales, AZ, on Friday.

Nogales Station Border Patrol agents working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations BEST Tunnel Task Force and federal police from Mexico found a tunnel being dug west of the DeConcini Port of Entry. The tunnel was five feet into the U.S. but did not open up into the country.

Mexican authorities took one person into custody.

The Border Enforcement Security Task Force "BEST" is a multi-agency Department of Homeland Security initiative, led by HSI.
