NEW RIVER, AZ (CBS5) -

Police arrested a man Saturday who they claim tried to set fire to his estranged wife's home in New River.

Gary Noel was caught leaving the home off Gavilan Peak Parkway near Daisy Mountain Drive around 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

"Gary had multiple tools on him, a crowbar, paperwork," said Joaquin Enriquez with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. "As they detained Gary they began to smell what appeared to be smoke and they heard fire alarms going off."

Police believe Noel started a fire in a bedroom of the home. Investigators said no people were home at the time but a cat died in the fire while a dog was rescued. The fire was quickly put out by fire crews.

Investigators said they have had other similar encounters with Noel in the past.

"Has been arrested by sheriff's deputies multiple times for aggravated harassment, violation of order of protections," said Enriquez.

Noel was taken into custody and could face charges of arson and violation of a restraining order.
