PHOENIX (CBS5) -
The White House on Sunday posted information on its website highlighting the potential effects on each state of the looming spending cuts known as sequestration.
Unless congressional leaders and the president can reach a compromise, $85 million in government cuts will automatically take effect on Friday, March 1.
According to the White House, Arizona would suffer cuts in many areas, including education, military and law enforcement.
About 240 teacher and aide jobs would be at risk as Arizona would lose $17.7 million in education funding, according to the document.
Additionally, 10,000 Arizona civilian Department of Defense employees would face furloughs that would reduce their pay by 20 percent.
The document also warns that Customs and Border Patrol officers would have their hours reduced and wait times at border crossings could increase dramatically.
Gov. Jan Brewer is in Washington and spoke about the cuts on CBS' Face the Nation Sunday morning. Read more on that here.
