MIDLAND CITY, AL (WSFA) -
The Dale County School System is planning a "Celebration of Life" ceremony to honor slain bus driver Charles Poland, Jr.
The celebration will be held Friday, March 15, 2013 inside the Midland City School cafeteria. The event will take place at 1 P.M.
Dale County Schools Superintendent Donny Bynum said the event will honor the life of Mr. Poland and "his students".
Space inside the cafeteria is very limited, so the school system is asking that anyone from the surrounding community who wants to take part join together on the school playground for a balloon release following the assembly.
Poland was gunned down by Jimmie Lee Dykes while trying to protect students on his Midland City school bus route on January 29. Dykes took a young boy named Ethan from the bus and held him hostage in a nearby underground bunker for a week.
Dykes was killed by FBI agents who raided the bunker when negotiations deteriorated. The child was not physically injured.
