BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Some customers are upset over a sales tax issue at a local Wal-Mart.
Customers at the Wal-Mart on Academy Drive paid too much on severe weather items during the tax free weekend. Folks were charged six percent sales tax instead of the required two percent.
A Wal-Mart spokesperson tells FOX6 they simply did not have time to change the codes in their computer system. The city did not announce they were participating in the tax free weekend until February 20th and the spokesperson says Alabama requires cities to give 30 days notice.
Customers say regardless of whose fault it is, they are the ones who had to pay more
"You know you're supposed to be able to get those do that. You can stock up on them of a lesser price," said Wal-Mart customer Marie Sly. "So that it will save you money. And if you're putting more money out there in taxes, you can't get as much as you need to get."
Bessemer Mayor Kenneth Gulley says other businesses were able to make the change and he does not understand why Wal-Mart could not.
Wal-Mart says if customers return with their receipt, they will offer a refund.
