CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Following the shooting death of a La Salle High School student, the Cincinnati Police Assistant Chief spoke out about the victim and his personal connection.

Asst. Chief Paul Humphries said he knew Justin Brown well and had even coached him in youth sports. He said he was not a bad kid, just made a stupid decision.

Justin Brown, 17, was taken to UC Medical Center on Sunday evening with life-threatening injuries after a shooting in the 1700 block of Carll Street.

Authorities say Brown, a student at La Salle, was shot in the passenger seat of a car just before 9 p.m. Police said Brown and three of his friends went to buy marijuana, and the shooting happened after the drug transaction.

On Monday, La Salle High School revealed Brown had died from his injuries.

Humphries revealed he knew Brown's family well, describing them as 'a great family'.

"It does bring it home. This isn't a case of neglectful parents or anything like that," he said.

Brown was a senior honor roll student at La Salle, and police say he had no prior record.

"We hear these stories of kids doing hill-hopping, and kids doing just stupid things. Most of us make it through life and we don't pay the ultimate price for those one or two stupid things we've done. In this case, it didn't work out that way," said Humphries.

A $1 million bond was also set on Tuesday for a suspect charged in the case, Dierres Lee. He was arrested and charged with murder and taken to the Hamilton County Justice Center.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.
