LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The man who held 60 students and teachers hostage at West End Christian School in Tuscaloosa in 1988 was up for parole Tuesday morning.

James Harvey did not appear at the hearing, but instead was represented by his attorney.

It took under an hour for the board of pardons and parole to deny his petition for parole.

Huntsville resident Whit Jordan was one of the students held hostage by Harvey.

He went to Harvey's first parole hearing, but couldn't make Tuesday's proceeding. He did send a letter to the board asking Harvey not be set free.

Jordan said he is relieved the board denied Harvey's request for parole.

"The fear of that day still sticks with me, whether it's at work or at a gas station. You go in a gas station, it's that what if and how am I going to react if something does happen," he said.

Harvey is serving his time in the Limestone Correctional Facility.

He will be eligible for parole in another five years. By then, he will be 72 years old.
