CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Services were held on Saturday for Maj. Tom Griffin at the Green Township Veterans Park.
Griffin, a Doolittle Raider and Cincinnati native, died on Feb. 26. He was 96.
Griffin was among 80 volunteers for the April 18, 1942, Doolittle mission. The bombing run by land-based planes that took off from an aircraft carrier at sea was credited with lifting American morale and shaking Japan in Pearl Harbor's aftermath.
Griffin parachuted over China and eluded capture, eventually returning to service on bombing runs from North Africa. His plane was shot down in 1943, and he spent nearly two years in a German prison camp.
Griffin was a Tri-State Warbird Museum Honored Veteran. His wife, Esther, preceded him in death, and he is survived by two sons, John and Gary.
Griffin was a retired accountant and spent a great deal of time traveling to speaking arrangements and dinners to honor the Doolittle Raiders.
The service included a B-25 flyover to honor Griffin.
His death leaves four surviving Doolittle Raiders.
