Big rig crash closes I-10 for hours, driver killed

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Another wreck on the I-10 shut the freeway down for hours Thursday. This time it happened in the eastbound lanes at the Broadway curve.

Officials say the driver died after his trailer caught fire.

This is the third big rig accident in the last couple of weeks that led to major highway shutdowns. Many of you are getting fed up and want something done.

"It's like being stuck in a clogged artery. There's no escape," said Cris Olson, who was stuck in the mess for two hours Thursday morning. He was over an hour late to work.

Beverly Teruel sent CBS 5 News a cell phone video of flames at the crash site.

"This morning, I got on the freeway an hour early to pick up a coworker, so a normal 25-minute drive turned into two hours," said Olson.

The Arizona Department of Safety spokesman says the semi driver identified as Arturo Munoz, 31, of Phoenix, drove into the median wall at the Broadway curve. He was killed.

"Debris from that semi actually went into the westbound lanes hitting two vehicles, causing minor injuries, a third driver rear-ended that semi, causing some injuries to that driver as well," said DPS Officer Carrick Cook.

It took hours for ADOT to open a few lanes in both directions as workers cleared the boxes on the road and removed the trailer.

"I watched so many people lose their heads today, going down the wrong side of traffic, all the school buses full of children who were unable to get to class, everyone in the same boat," said Olson.

In the past couple of weeks there have been three major semi crashes that closed the freeway for hours.

"It'd be terrific if we had a specific lane or something like that," said Olson.

States like California require big rigs to stay on the far right lane. There have been attempts to make restrictions for semis here in the past but those have failed at the Capitol. The crash is still under investigation.
