PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Low-income renters in Arizona aren't likely to find an apartment they can afford, according to a newly published report.
There are only 18 rental homes affordable and available for every 100 extremely low-income renters in Arizona, the report stated. Extremely low income households have incomes at or below 30 percent of the area median income.
The report is called Housing Spotlight: America's Affordable Housing Shortage, and How to End It. It was jointly released by Arizona Housing Alliance and the National Low Income Housing Coalition, a DC-based research and policy organization.
With very few affordable units available to them, three out of four extremely low-income renter households end up spending more than half of their limited income on rent and utility costs, the report said.
"This report shows that the people in Arizona who are at greatest risk of homelessness could be a war hero, a child or someone's grandmother," said Valerie Iverson, executive director of Arizona Housing Alliance.
