Alabama Prison/Parole Population Growing

For once, Alabama is near the top of a national list. But this time, that's not a good thing. According to the U.S. Justice Department, Alabama is seeing big increases in its prison population.

For example, Alabama saw a 30% rise in the number of parolees within one year. That ranks second in the nation, behind only North Dakota. Nationally, the parole population grew by only 3%.

According to the Justice Department statistics, 3.2% of all American adults are now under the thumb of the corrections system, including prisons, jails, parole, work release, and house arrest. That means one out of 32 Americans is in prison, on probation, or on parole. One out of 8 parolees is a women.
