AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -
For the second time in three days Auburn police are investigating a shooting with injuries...this time a middle school was locked down as a precaution.
Investigators say around 3:40 Monday afternoon a 17-year-old pulled out a handgun and fired at his neighbor near their homes on Darden Avenue. Police say the neighbor had accused the teen of stealing from him.
After the teen fired his gun, the neighbor returned fire with a shotgun, striking the teen in the stomach with birdshot.
Police say the wounded juvenile ran away in the direction of Drake Middle School.
"We felt like it was best to just lock the school down and not let any kids outside or anyone inside just until we got the situation under control," said Police Chief Tommy Dawson.
The teen was arrested shortly after the shooting and is expected to recover from his injuries.
Police say he could be charged with reckless endangerment if the neighbor decides to press charges.
