GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

The Arizona Cardinals have called Flagstaff their training camp home for more than 20 years.

But now there are strong indications the team will be gearing up for the 2013 season back in the Valley.

"I think it's an excellent idea," said Cardinals fan Francisco Castro. "I'd be there every day."

The Glendale City Council was given an update Tuesday and provided the latest proposal to have the Cardinals hold their training camp in the team's backyard.

The training camp deal calls for the Cardinals to sign a 15-year agreement with the city of Glendale that would utilize the University of Phoenix Stadium and the youth sports fields next door.

NFL training camps are traditionally held in July and August.

City officials estimate that bringing the Cardinals to the West Valley for six weeks in the summer would generate more than $15 million to the local economy.

Dave McAlindin is the assistant director of economic development for Glendale.

He said that during the summer when it's 105 degrees outside, it's hard to attract visitors.

"It will attract fans not only to training camp, but while they're there they can also take advantage of Westgate and the Tanger Outlets," said McAlindin. "That is a win for Glendale and it's a win for the Cardinals."

Karen Landis runs an antique business in the heart of Glendale called The Apple Tree.

She said that getting the Cardinals in town for an extra six weeks would be fantastic.

"The summers are slow, so we usually close a couple days a week," said Landis. "The more people that would come down, the better to help our bottom line."

City officials said that bringing the Cardinals' training camp to Glendale would also generate about 200 temporary jobs.

The City Council and Cardinals are expected to finalize a deal in the next few weeks.
