Stratford student arrested for bringing gun to school

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Two bullets discovered in a school hallway ultimately led investigators to a gun concealed in a student's waistband Thursday at Stratford High School.

The 17-year-old student was arrested without incident, and no students were harmed.

School officials said a staff member found the two unspent rounds of ammunition in the hallway Wednesday, and after reviewing surveillance video the school resource officer identified a suspect.

The student was then searched Thursday morning, and a loaded .22-caliber revolver was found, police said.

"This student was very cooperative. He did not try to flee. He did not try to access the firearm. Once he saw the SRO, again, he was very cooperative and did surrender the firearm," said Tony Majors, Metro assistant superintendent of student services.

The student told officials he brought the weapon to school for protection in the community, not for any threat at school.

According to police, the student said he found the gun.

He will be expelled for one calendar year.

This is the 11th gun found at a Metro school so far this school year.
