AKRON, OH (WOIO) -
Akron Zips starting point guard Alex Abreu will in court instead of class Friday morning after he was arrested by Akron police Thursday afternoon.
Detectives from the Akron Police Department's Anti-Violence Bureau, Narcotics Unit, say Abreu and Austin L. Durgala, both 21, were arrested for trafficking in marijuana and possession of marijuana.
It happened around 4:30 p.m.
The two were charged after detectives seized over five pounds of marijuana at Durgala's residence on East Dartmore Street.
Abreu has now been suspended from the team, just one week from the Mid-American Conference tournament at The Q. The Zips are the number one seed in the tournament.
He is averaging ten points and six assists on the season.
The university released a statement on the arrest:
Junior point guard Alex Abreu has been suspended from The University of Akron men's basketball team indefinitely pending the outcome of a police investigation.
The University is aware of the situation and is currently gathering more information.
This is the second time Abreu has been suspended from the team. The first time was in November of 2011 for a violation of university policy.
The Zips host arch-rival Kent State on Friday at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Abreu and Durgala were booked into the Summit County Jail.
