MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The suspect convicted of murder in the death of a 70-year-old man in Montgomery in 2013 has been sentenced to life in prison.

Curtis Caldwell, 49, was convicted on April 2. The District Attorney pushed for the maximum sentence due to the nature of the crime and Caldwell's prior criminal history.

According to prosecutors, the victim, Jesse Stevens, was on the phone with his sister when Caldwell, his neighbor, came to his door to borrow something.

The victim was then beaten to death with a battery charger. Stevens was found dead at the scene in the 100 block of Debra Drive around 9:30 a.m. Investigators say he died from head trauma.

An initial investigation indicated Stevens' death was the result of a robbery. Further investigation identified Caldwell as a suspect.

Caldwell was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force on March 8, 2013, after using the victim's credit card.
