THEODORE, AL (WAFF) -

A school van carrying students and parents from Riverhill School in Florence was involved in a crash near Mobile, on their way to Dauphin Island.

According to WPMI, at least 10 people were taken to Mobile area hospitals after the large passenger van collided with a car in Theodore.

Employees of a nearby business said a man broke a van window to rescue the children inside. The woman driving the other vehicle was transported to the hospital by medical helicopter.

Several children appeared to be badly injured, but no fatalities are reported.

According to Mary Jane Fowler, Principal of Riverhill School, 17 students and 15 parents were on the bus at the time of the wreck.

"After talking with parents on the trip, it looks like everyone will be ok, but as a precaution we have taken everyone to the hospitals in the area," she said.

Some girls on the van hit their heads, but they were alert at the scene. One adult may have a leg injury.

"We are very fortunate and they will be fine, except for the trauma and experience," Fowler continued.

The group traveled to Dauphin Island Sunday. School officials haven't determined if they will stay or return home.
