Alabama's school superintendent says the State Board of Education didn't relinquish control of school standards when it adopted the Common Core standards for schools statewide.
Superintendent Tommy Bice talked about the standards Tuesday because a state Senate committee is scheduled to consider a bill Wednesday that would repeal the standards.
Critics of the national standards say they take away local control and give too much control to Washington.
Bice said Alabama retained sovereignty in adopting the standards and incorporating them into Alabama's College and Career Ready Standards.
He said he's not sure what standards the state would follow if the legislation passes.
The state Senate Education Committee is set to consider the bill sponsored by committee Chairman Dick Brewbaker of Montgomery at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
