The Alabama Senate has given final approval to legislation to consolidate law enforcement programs. The Senate's 17-2 vote Tuesday night sends the bill to the governor for signing into law.
Gov. Robert Bentley and Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh developed the legislation that they said would improve the efficiency of 14 law enforcement programs. It reorganizes programs into a Cabinet-level agency called the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency.
It will have two units. One, called the Department of Public Safety, will include major portions of the existing Department of Public Safety, the Marine Police, and law enforcement units from the Public Service Commission and the Revenue Department.
The other, called the State Bureau of Investigations, will include the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement units from the state liquor agency, the Forestry Commission and the Agriculture Department.
