CENTRE, Ala. (AP) - Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver has joined a group of law enforcement officials voicing displeasure with a proposed gun law working its way through the state Legislature.

Shaver told the Cherokee County Post (http://bit.ly/ZH0Yiw ) Senate Bill 286 would allow non-U.S. Citizens to receive pistol permits, repeal prohibition of guns in many public places and grant permission to carry pistols on private property - which would be against the wishes of the property owner.

Shaver says his chief complaint is the proposal could establish local boards to determine whether a sheriff's denial of a concealed weapons permit was appropriate.

Shaver says lawmakers may not realize the consequences of the proposal because they did not discuss it with law enforcement officials beforehand.
