BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Passengers are getting a first look at the new terminal at Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport.
The Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport is called an "international airport," but there are no international flights coming in and out. Airport officials hope to change that with the new renovations.
In addition to new gates, the new terminal features a federal inspection station. This is what airports must have to be able to host international flights.
It may still take some time before we see international flights, but officials say this is another step in that direction. Other features of the new terminal include state-of-the-art energy efficient technology and new digital artwork lining the walls. New restaurants like Jim n' Nick's BBQ, Chick Fil A and Good People Brewery are located in the new terminal with even more to come.
"Next year we plan to open 3 more restaurants. They are 'Talladega Grill,' another 'Starbucks' and 'Ground Birmingham' - it's a gourmet burger concept," said David Wagner, the Director of Operations at the airport.
Those restaurants are scheduled to open in May 2014. That is the same time the new renovations on Concourse C will be complete and the terminal modernization project will be over.
