MOUNT JULIET, TN (WSMV) -

A good Samaritan's vehicle has been recovered after it was allegedly stolen by the man for whom the concerned neighbor had stopped to help.

Police said Stephen Fields, 20, of Old Hickory, had crashed his car into a Mt. Juliet creek early Wednesday near Old Lebanon Dirt Road and Night Hawk Drive, and a nearby resident who heard the crash then drove to the scene and checked to see if Fields needed aid.

"All the sudden this guy emerges up over the edge of the ravine covered in blood, soaking wet and screaming 'Where's Jacob and where's Shane?" neighbor Stephen Petricca said.

Moments later another neighbor arrived and jumped into the creek.

"He said somebody was in there or somebody was with him," Jeremy Gilchrist said. "So even though it's cold as can be, you know, I had to go in and check and make sure."

But as Petricca checked on Gilchrist, he suddenly heard the engine of his SUV.

"I turn around and look, guy jumps in my truck - 'vavoom,' takes off," Petricca said.

A Mt. Juliet officer who was responding to the crash saw the stolen SUV pass him at a high rate of speed, so he attempted to stop Fields.

Eventually, Fields jumped from the vehicle and ran into a yard on Clearview Drive. Petricca's SUV ended up in the nearby woods. But Fields didn't get far. A neighbor, in his underwear with a rifle in hand, kept Fields in place until officers arrived.

Petricca got his SUV back but there are some dents. He added, this is a tale he'll tell for some time.

"It's a funny story, he's obviously going to spend quite a bit of time in jail, but at the end of the day nobody is hurt," Petricca said.

Fields is charged with theft, resisting arrest, evading arrest and leaving the scene of a crash with property damage. Police say Fields could face more charges based on toxicology results.

He's currently behind bars at the Wilson County Jail.
