MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA) -

Millbrook police are identifying the victim whose body was found Sunday evening inside of a burning vehicle. An autopsy confirms the remains are those of 17-year-old Millbrook resident Victoria Ashley Smith.

An investigation into the cause of the single-vehicle crash and Smith's cause of death remain under investigation, though authorities say they do not anticipate any foul play or criminal charges in the case.

The vehicle was discovered around 8:40 p.m. by a Millbrook police officer on routine patrol in the area of Highway 14 and Kensley Lane. The officer found what appeared to be a vehicle smoldering in the wood line on the south side of Hwy 14. As the officer turned around to investigate, Millbrook Police Communications received several calls about a vehicle fire at the location. Responding officers found a 1996 Acura 4 door sedan fully engulfed in flames in the wood line.

Responding officers and several motorists who stopped to assist were unable to get close enough to the vehicle to render aid. The Millbrook Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the vehicle fire.

Once the scene was under control, police and fire officials discovered that the vehicle was occupied by a single occupant, who had been entrapped inside the vehicle.

Chief P.K. Johnson says, "at this time, the Millbrook Police Department is investigating this incident as a single vehicle accident involving a fatality. This case has been turned over to our department's Traffic Homicide Unit for investigation, which is standard procedure anytime we have a traffic collision that results in the death or life threatening injuries. Once the investigation is concluded, the facts of the case will be presented to the Elmore County Grand Jury for its consideration."

Johnson goes on to say, "Our investigators believe that the vehicle was traveling east bound on Hwy 14, when for reasons unknown, the vehicle left the roadway just east of Kensley Lane, striking several trees and coming to a rest in the wood line. This appears to be a terrible accident and tragic loss of life. Our hearts and prayers go out to the victim's family."
