BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
A condo building in Baton Rouge was evacuated Monday afternoon after the discovery of 100 "shake-and-bake" suspected meth labs inside one of the condo units.
A probation officer making a routine visit discovered several dozen suspected drug labs inside a condo located on Missionary Ridge Court in Baton Rouge. The scene is near Coursey Boulevard. During the investigation, detectives found the 100 meth labs in a bathroom, but all were inactive. Deputies also found approximately 12 grams of meth.
The probation officer called authorities and St. George firefighters were dispatched to the scene around 3 p.m. A hazardous material team from the Baton Rouge fire department was also called in for assistance.
The four-unit condo building was evacuated as crews worked to remove the meth labs from the residence.
Christopher Helmke, 32, has been arrested in connection with the case.
Helmke is charged with possession of Schedule I Narcotics and creation of a clandestine lab. The investigation is ongoing and more charges may be filed against Helmke.
A private cleaning crew is on scene doing the majority of the cleanup work while fire department observes the process.
