Burglary suspects hid in attic

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Two people are facing burglary charges after Marion County Sheriff's deputies arrested them Monday afternoon hiding in the attic of a Salem home, investigators said.

Deputies responded to the home in the 4100 block of Fisher Road NE just before 4:45 p.m.

They had received a call from a tenant at the address reporting that while she was in the process of moving out, someone had broken into her home several times, deputies told FOX 12.

The home had been ransacked and left in total disarray.

As deputies were en route to investigate the burglary, the tenant called 911 again reporting that she heard noises in her attic and thought someone might be hiding there.

A friend who accompanied the tenant to the house wedged a piece of wood in the overhead attic door, blocking anyone from leaving, deputies said.

Canine Deputy Jason Bernards and "Rolo" arrived at the home along with two other deputies.

They took Duane Howard, 36, and Amiemay Munoz, 30, into custody, investigators said.

Both were in the attic when deputies arrived.

Both suspects were booked into the Marion County Jail on burglary charges.

According to deputies, Howard has an extensive criminal record, including arrests for assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, being a felon with a firearm and endangering minors.

Deputies said he was also wanted on a warrant for a state parole violation.

Munoz has prior arrests for possessing methamphetamine, identity theft, criminal trespassing and forgery, investigators said.

Both suspects told deputies they were only sleeping in the attic and they had nothing to do with the missing property, detectives told FOX 12.

Munoz and Howard claimed to be homeless at booking, deputies said.
