MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A former KKK member is now joining the effort to stop the proposed rally in Memphis.

Scott Shepherd calls himself a "reformed racist."  He now shares a message of peace.

Shepherd says he was a KKK member for more than 20 years and he is sharing some pretty strong words to Memphis residents about what is scheduled to happen in the city at the end of the month.

"I'll tell you, it is a possibility of violence," Shepherd warned.

He says he has participated in KKK rallies in the past and his advice to Memphians on Easter weekend is simple.

"Don't show up, always take it seriously. They're dangerous people. They're dangerous because of their anger," Shepherd said.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong already said that Klan members will not be allowed to wear masks and they cannot bring guns.

He also said everyone who shows up at the rally will be searched.

Scott Shepherd says the problem will not be with the Klansmen themselves, but with their supporters.

"There's no way to check on all these people," Shepherd continued. "That's where you could have problems with weapons and the threat of violence erupting.

Shepherd says he is trying to stop the rally.  He even went as far as calling a KKK Imperial Wizard in North Carolina.

He was not surprised when the KKK leader called him back and left a message.

"The voice mail was very angry, the language was like bathroom graffiti," said Shepherd. "They blocked their numbers, so it's a typical cowardly behavior to hide their numbers and hide behind their masks."

Director Armstrong says as far as he knows, the KKK rally is still scheduled to take place on March 30, and his officers will be there in full force to keep the city and its citizens safe.
