TROY, AL (WSFA) -

Troy University's Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. says most universities can't avoid a tuition hike due to the drop in state and federal funds, but he says troy is still finding ways to stay competitive and affordable in tough economic times.

"we're the healthiest we've ever been academically, athletically and I can say to you that we are healthy financially and it's our intent to stay that way," Dr. Hawkins said.

Dr. Hawkins says Troy is staying competitive by adding new programs in all colleges. He says online education has become increasingly important.

"we have at least 20 percent of our students to come and walk across the stage who have never been on this campus before," Dr. Hawkins said.

Dr. Hawkins says he does not see online classes eventually eliminating on campus courses. But he does say troy is on track to becoming a competitive university of the future.

"The successful university of the future is one that is international, it is high tech and it is high touch," Dr. Hawkins said.

Dr. Hawkins says Troy has reinvented their global campus including online education, saving the university millions a year.

"And by reinventing that, we closed 40 sites and went to 24 sites outside the state, we focus more on distant learning and in the process we save $10 million dollars a year," Dr. Hawkins said.

Dr. Hawkins says there are several new projects underway on satellite campuses.

On the Dothan campus, a donor just pledged $1.5 million dollars to the classroom building construction project.

The chancellor says they just completed a fundraising campaign of almost $8 million dollars for a new classroom building at the Phenix city campus.

Troy has satellite campuses across the U.S. and in six other countries including 1200 students in Vietnam.
