PRESCOTT, AZ (AP) -

A $9 million project to bring the runway at the Prescott Municipal Airport in line with federal safety standards is complete.

A grant from the Federal Aviation Administration covered the majority of the cost. The city and the state split the rest of the tab.

The runway at one of the nation's busiest general aviation airports had to be extended 400 feet to the northeast. Two taxiways also had to match up to the end of the runway.

The project also included an underground storm drain system that parallels the main runway and new lighting.

Prescott Mayor Marlin Kuykendall says companies are taking note of the available space for expansion.

The airport logs more than 680 takeoffs and landings each day.
