Covington discusses options for two aging bridges

COVINGTON, KENTUCKY (FOX19) -

Residents got a chance to look at different repair options for two aging bridges in Northern Kentucky on Wednesday.

A town hall meeting was held in Covington to discuss the city's aging 11th and 15th Street Bridges. Officials from the City of Covington and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet discussed each repair or replacement option in detail.

Those options include tearing down the bridges, rebuilding the bridges for pedestrian traffic only or rebuilding the bridges to allow vehicular traffic.

"With the three different options, there's different costs for each. The vehicular bridge option is around $1 million and the pedestrian bridge and removal of the bridge options are both between $200,000 to $300,000," said Mike Yeager, Assistant Covington City Engineer.

The 11th Street Bridge not only faces problems of deterioration, but it is also not high enough to meet current railroad safety standards. The bridge is located at the CSX railroad between Russel Street and Madison Avenue.

In addition, the 15th Street Bridge is also facing the same deterioration problem, which connects a commercial area to a residential neighborhood.

Officials expect more discussion before a final option is selected and say it will take months to complete.
