JACKSON, Miss. – Senior right-hander Kaleb Manuel tossed the first complete game of his career Wednesday and the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team cruised to a 7-4 win at Jackson State.
Southeastern (15-7), taking advantage of five Jackson State errors, came from behind in the middle innings to take the lead for good.
Trailing 3-2 entering the sixth, Jameson Fisher led off the inning with a single up the middle. After moving to second on Sam Roberson's ground out, Fisher got caught in a rundown on Cory Bryan's fielder's choice. The shortstop threw the ball into the third-base dugout, allowing Fisher to score. Bryan, who wound up at third because of the error, scored on Brett Hoffman's sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, Ladd Rhodes scored from first on a throwing error by Jackson State pitcher Brandon Gregory after Ben Hernandez bunted for a base hit. Winding up at third, Hernandez scored on Harry Slade's single to right field. After Fisher was hit by a pitch, Roberson extended his hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single to right.
Roberson scored the Lions' first run of the game after drawing a one-out walk in the second. He moved into scoring position after Hoffman was hit by a pitch and scored on Alex Marse's single to right.
Jackson State (10-11) scored an unearned run in the second off Manuel to tie the game, 1-1, and added two more runs in the third to take an early lead.
The Mamou, La., native settled down after the third, retiring 18 of the game's final 19 batters in order. After having set down nine-in-a-row entering the seventh, JSU shortstop Gary Thomas doubled down the left-field line. He moved up to third on a deep fly to center that Bryan tracked down and scored on Stephen Curtis' groundout to short.
Manuel (2-1) earned the win for Southeastern, fanning a career-high 10 batters, while Tiger reliever Alexander Juday (0-1) suffered the loss.
Southeastern opens Southland Conference play Friday at Northwestern State.
