BAKER, LA (WAFB) -
Police said they arrested a man who is suspected of scamming elderly people with fake roof repairs.
The Baton Rouge Police Department said Brandon Ferguson, 24, of Baker was taken into custody on theft charges Wednesday night. Investigators said he scammed at least three victims, all in their 80s. They added he had accomplices, but they have not yet discovered their identities.
Police said the scammers told their victims they needed roof repairs or some sort of protective coating. They are accused of quoting the elderly people a low price and then intimidating them into paying a lot more than that once they were done. According to police, the "work" was them spraying paint on the roof in most cases.
Detectives said Ferguson is accused of stealing jewelry from inside at least one victim's home. BRPD said the reported cases happened in the Red Oaks and Broadmoor areas.
Ferguson was arrested at his home by officers with the Baker Police Department. He is charged with three counts of theft of assets of an aged person and one count of felony theft.
Police believe there could be more victims in the area, even in surrounding parishes. They want anyone who thinks they may have been victims of this scam to contact the BRPD Financial Crimes Division at 225-389-3871.
