Kickoff to Lemonade Day 2013

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A big day is coming up for the state's future business owners. It's the third annual Lemonade Day, organizers had a kickoff celebration at LSU on Thursday.

Recipes, business planning workbooks, advice from successful professionals---everything kids across the state will need to run the lemonade stands they will open in may on the third annual Lemonade Day.

"It's so great to see young entrepreneurs start their own business, manage their own money, and really enjoy...like I enjoy business," said Georges.

Louisiana businessmen and former gubernatorial candidate, John Georges and Todd Graves, one of the founders of Raising Cane's, brought this idea to town from Houston back in 2010. Graves says they felt the need to give the state's up and coming entrepreneurs all the tools they will need to build a thriving business starting at an early age.

"For me I learned, growing up, how to be an entrepreneur doing my own lemonade stand," said Graves. "For me it was a big deal to learn these things, and I'm hoping these children learn the same values...someday have a successful business of their own and also give back to the community."

Baton Rouge mayor Kip Holden applauds Lemonade Day's organizers for introducing the program the youth of the capital city.

"Let these young people know that people care about them. We want them to be successful, and we're one family working toward the same destiny," said Holden.

Since it started in Baton Rouge, the event has grown to include thousands of little businessmen and business-women. Graves hopes to bring in even more this year.

"What I love about Lemonade Day is it teaches kids not only do you make money, you can spend some of it...but take a third of it and save it. And take another third of it and put it back into the community," said Graves.

Lemonade Day is May 4th. Graves says you can sign your child up and get more information on the day's event www.louisiana.lemonadeday.org

WAFB's Kelsey Davis also asked John Georges about his plans to buy the Advocate newspaper. He says things are in the works, but right now it's too early to comment any further.
