BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -
The Boaz City School system turned a surplus in its budget, and gave the money to their employees.
Checks were handed out to employees at a staff meeting after school on Thursday at Boaz Intermediate School.
A board member was at each of the city's schools handing out $600 checks to full time employees and $300 for part time employees.
School officials said teachers haven't had a raise since 2007.
"It's what we need to do. We talk about being about people and developing the path and practice. It's important as superintendent and this board and all our principals to give back," said superintendent Mark Isley.
A total of $160,000 was handed out.
School board officials said they hope they can do it again in the future.
