AMITE, LA (WAFB) -
A news
website reports a man convicted of killing three Southeastern Louisiana University
students and injuring two others in a drunk driving crash has applied for early
release from prison.
According
to ActionNews17, Derek Quebedeaux's application will go before a judge on April
2. Quebedeaux pleaded guilty in November 2010 to three counts of vehicular
homicide and five counts of felony hit and run. In February 2011, he was
sentenced to 12 years in prison, meaning he has only served a little over two
years.
According
to the Hammond Police Department, Quebedeaux ran into a group of students
walking along the side of the road in March 2009. The three people who died in
the wreck were identified as Maxime Profit, 23, of Vaires Sur Marne, France; Beth
Boudreaux, 19, of Husser, Louisiana; and Thurman "Rion" Lowe, III,
24, of Kenner. The injured students were identified as Nadine Steward of
England and Maja Bradonjic of Belgrade, Serbia. Steward was 18 and Bradonjic
was 24 at the time of the crash.
The report
indicates Judge Douglas Hughes told Quebedeaux at the sentencing hearing that
three years of the punishment would have to be served without the benefit of
parole, probation or suspension of sentence. Quebedeaux has been serving his
time at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail in Amite. According to the report, sources
said Quebedeaux has been a "model prisoner."
ActionNews17
stated Quebedeaux's attorney argues in the "uniform application for
post-conviction relief" that his client's confession was acquired without
a warrant and left him without any other option but to plead guilty to the
charges. The report added Quebedeaux is asking for credit for time served while
under house arrest.
According
to the report, District Attorney Scott Perrilloux disagrees with the claims and
arguments in the application. It stated he described the motion as
"baseless."
